"You can't gain muscle and lose fat at the same time" gets repeated often enough to sound settled. The actual research doesn't agree with the strong version of that claim — it's more specific and more interesting than a flat yes or no.

Protein is the variable with the clearest evidence behind it
Of the factors reviewed, protein intake had the most specific, quantified backing. The review reports that "a daily protein intake of 1.6 g/kg/day is superior to 0.8 g/kg/day for promoting greater improvements" in muscle mass, measured by bioelectrical impedance. That's not a marginal difference — it's double the protein intake, compared head to head, with resistance training held constant.
The review also names a high-protein diet paired with "intermittent and progressive energy restrictions plus resistance training" as an approach that "might preserve fat-free mass" during the process. Two details in that phrase matter more than they first look: intermittent and progressive. Rather than one flat deficit held constant for months, the approach it describes cycles restriction against periods closer to maintenance, and increases the size of the deficit gradually rather than starting at the largest cut a plan will ever ask for. Neither detail is a small deficit held forever — both are closer to periodization than to a single fixed number.
Separately, the review flags creatine monohydrate as "another valuable nutritional strategy that should be considered" alongside protein and training — one of very few supplements with this level of consistent research support behind it, rather than the general noise around most supplement claims. Of the factors named, protein intake is still the one with the clearest, most specific evidence behind an exact number.
Why it's not equally available to everyone
The training-status pattern here is one of the most consistently repeated findings in this area of research, even where exact numbers vary between studies: recomposition tends to be most readily achievable for beginners, for people returning to training after a break, and for people starting with a higher body fat percentage.
